Intestinal Health: complexity, interaction and immune system

The challenges of maintaining intestinal health in swine and poultry production systems and the results of research related to the microbiome are part of AveSui 2018 panel, on August 1st

Intestinal Health: complexity, interaction and immune system

Intestinal health has become a central issue in the production of poultry and swine. With restrictions on the use of antibiotics as feed additives, the scientific community has increasingly directed its research in order to understand the functioning of the intestinal microbiota and its interaction with the host organism. Enteric pathogens are responsible for significant losses in monogastric production. Therefore, knowing the aspects that involve all the functions of the gastrointestinal tract and its interactions with the microbiota and immune system of great importance for the effective maintenance of the productivities reached so far by the herds.

The topic will be discussed in the Panel of Intestinal Health that takes place inside the XVII Technical Scientific Seminar of Poultry, Swine and Fish, on August 1st, during AveSui Latin America 2018, in Medianeira (PR). The coordination will be made by Dr. Elizabeth Santin, from the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR). “For the panel discussions we will bring people with very relevant information on this subject so that they can improve understanding of microbiota-host-intestinal health interactions. This without giving up a historical overview of the importance of the functionality of the digestive system to reach the level of productivity we achieve today, “explains Elizabeth.

According to the Panel Coordinator, once producers understand that all processes related to management, environment, nutrition and biosecurity affect intestinal health and its functionality, it will be easier to understand and modulate bowel health in favor of well-being and productivity of the animals.

Intestinal health care

The panel will be opened by Professor Dr. Marcos Macari, from the University of Agrarian Sciences (FCA-Unesp), who will give the lecture “The importance of the functionality of the gastrointestinal system to the current parameters of production in monogastric.” According to Macari, the gastrointestinal tract is the gateway to the nutrients, which in itself would justify the need for good intestinal health. “The term health has been used to emphasize that the physiological activities of the gastrointestinal tract must be intact, both in terms of motility, digestion and absorption of nutrients,” says the FCA-Unesp professor. “On the other hand, it should be understood that the cellular and molecular structures that control a large number of biochemical and molecular events must also be intact,” he concludes.

A good example is the mechanisms regulating food intake, the origin of which is the gastrointestinal tract (GI). The motility is one of them, responsible for the transit of the food as well as for its time of permanence in each segment until the digestion and absorption of the nutrients. Another is the form and composition of the food itself, which can accelerate or delay the period in which they are in certain segments. Also, the defense mechanisms exist in the TGI by the GALT system (Gut-associated lymphoid tissue, in Portuguese, lymphoid tissue associated to the intestine). These immune responses have great relevance because the loss of the balance between aggression and defense, especially in the duodenum, jejunum and ileum, impairs the digestion and absorption of nutrients. “Thus, intestinal health should not be understood as just a mechanism of action of bacteria, viruses or other microorganisms that act in the gastrointestinal tract, or when there is a predominance of pathogenic microorganisms that cause imbalance of immune responses, causing damage to the animal’s development”, says Macari.

Dissemination of scientific knowledge

The Scientific Technical Seminar on Poultry, Swine and Fish, which reaches its 17th edition, creates an ideal space for the dissemination of research, new knowledge and debates on strategic themes for the three segments involved. Organized by the Oswaldo Gessulli Institute (IOG), the seminar will include six panels plus the Congress of Precision Livestock Farming on August 1st, 2nd and 3rd, within AveSui Latin America 2018.

The topics covered in the panels involve meat processing, Salmonella, intestinal health, feed conversion, psychoculture and an upgrade in egg production and welfare, in addition to the Congress of Precision Livestock Farming.
