Technology in poultry galpons will be fundamental to remain in the market

Disclosure Investments in new technologies in ambience, are a path without return Disclosure The adoption of technologies of ambience in aviaries is a path without return and will be decisive for producers to remain in the market. This is the evaluation of the speakers of the webinar “Challenges and innovations in ambience in the production of birds”, which took place on Tuesday (10). The event, promoted by Gessulli Agribusiness – director of AveSui Latin America – sponsored by Phytobiotec, had more than 560 entries.

How to face the strong heat waves that hit the country and generated impacts on poultry farms? The speakers point out that the adoption of technology is fundamental to coping with thermal stress, given the climate change scenario. But not just that: animal welfare is on the consumer’s agenda at the time of purchase. And at that point, ambience is all about.  Professor Iran Oliveira, from Esalq/USP, who coordinated the webinar, pointed out that the speakers hit four essential points. “There are four important issues: planning, investment, technology and well-being. It’s a no-return path, with this rapidtechnological evolution knocking our door at very large speed, with applications, smart fans, intelligent systems, which are triggered automatically. All this paraphernalia that involves cutting and laying hens”, he says.

The account that should be done when thinking about investing, in the assessment of Professor Iran Oliveira, is not always how much will be gained, but in reducing losses. “I say this over time, are 35 years of work in ambience. We need to think about quantifying how much we are losing and reducing this loss,” he explains.

Production Planning

In recent months, the heat waves that hit the country have caused losses to the winemakers. In Bastos, in the interior of São Paulo and where the second largest egg production in the country is located, farms have lost thousands of animals. This scenario points to the need for planning, said researcher Paulo Abreu, from Embrapa Swine and Poultry.  “It takes production planning. There is no point in placing a high-scale production with low level of technicalising. The producer has to be aware of his investment conditions and provide a density so that he can perform well for these birds”, he says.

Productivity Begins with good ambience

The good facilities of a farm, that is, everything related to ambience should be the first focus of the producer, in the opinion of Álvaro Burin Júnior, poultry account manager at Zinpro. “My opinion should start with a good ambience, good facilities,” he said. Still, he ponders, even if you take all the necessary measures, an environment is never challenge-free.  “And what I see is a natural tendency to, little by little, professionalism take over and even swallow small productions, which has more rudimentary structures. As this happens, we will have more productive capacity, more technology, greater productivity,” burin believes.

It is necessary to think about technology without forgetting welfare

“I think it is impossible for us to get out of technology today, we do not work allied to technology. But at the same time we have a question of well-being, which hangs in the air”, summarizes José Antonio Delfino Barbosa Filho, professor at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC). According to him, it is necessary to trace a middle ground between the adoption of high technology and sustainability, in the sense of ethics in consumption. “Well-being is part of the changing consumer, the consumption we have today,” he says.  In this sense, Barbosa Filho points out that there is the issue of production with more ethical and less technical – that is, the most organic and sustainable – and the one with a focus on high productivity, focused on exports. “The two mechanisms can coexist efficiently,” he points out.

Focus should be on cost benefit

Producers need to believe more in technologies, points out Ernani Vieira, commercial manager of Phytobiotec. The second step, he says, it is necessary to get out of the perspective that technology generates cost. “Instead of just thinking about cost, you have to think about the cost benefit,” he says.   The impacts that thermal stress generates on farms need to be compared with the benefits of technology. In the expert’s opinion, investments may not be able to recover, but losses can be reduced.  Professor Iran finally concludes that when talking about ambience it is necessary to abandon the achismos. There’s no cake recipe either. “What is good for Zeca, in Ceará, is not good for Paulo, in Chapecó,” he says. It is necessary to adopt programs and protocols of ambience, whether in aviaries with yellow house system, dark house, or a fully air-conditioned system. “No matter what technological level you have, there is a need to establish a standardized method,” concludes the researcher.
