AVIGUARD from MDL
Competitive-exclusion product controls intestinal disease in poultry
KENILWORTH, N.J., [August 1, 2007] — Looking to expand its growing line of intestinal-health products for poultry, Schering-Plough Animal Health Corporation has acquired distribution rights in selected markets abroad for AVIGUARD, a natural feed and water additive that helps control costly gut diseases such as salmonellosis and necrotic enteritis.
The rights were acquired from Microbial Developments Limited (MDL), a biotechnology company in Malvern, England, and manufacturer of AVIGUARD.
AVIGUARD is a unique, freeze-dried product. Only one dose is required and is administered to birds by coarse spray in the hatchery or in the drinking water of older birds. It is categorized as a “competitive-exclusion” product because it contains natural gut flora that prevent the colonization of harmful bacteria in the intestinal tract.
“Along with our vaccines for coccidiosis and necrotic enteritis, AVIGUARD gives our customers another tool for promoting better intestinal health while reducing or even eliminating in-feed antibiotics from their programs,” says Charles Broussard, DVM, global technical services director for Schering-Plough Animal Health.
Paolo Sani, DVM, poultry regional market manager for Schering-Plough Animal Health, based in Italy, says that AVIGUARD has been shown to control harmful bacteria such as salmonella and pathogenic E. coli, which can be transmitted to people.
In the European Union, AVIGUARD will help fill the void left by the ban on antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs), Sani says. “AGPs controlled gut disease, but are no longer allowed,” he explains.” Producers need alternative methods of protecting intestinal health. They can do this with our coccidiosis vaccines and AVIGUARD.”
Independent research
In a published study at the University of Georgia, renowned poultry researcher Dr. Charles Hofacre and associates found that AVIGUARD was “superior to virginiamycin and bacitracin MD for increasing broiler body weight gain and reducing feed consumption” in birds with induced necrotic enteritis. In a separate published study, Hofacre and associates also found that Aviguard was “significantly more effective” and yielded better feed efficiency than three other intestinal bioproducts for reducing gross lesions resulting from an induced necrotic enteritis infection.
AVIGUARD can be used in all types of poultry, has a refrigerated shelf life of 18 months and no withdrawal period is required. It is easy to administer in the hatchery, and can be given to older birds following stresses such as transport.
Producers using AVIGUARD have also reported seeing drier litter, says Sani. “In addition, field reports indicate the product may help prevent hock burn and pododermatitis.”
Broussard adds that “The safety profile for Aviguard is impressive based on over 2 billion doses sold since the product became available in 1995.”
AVIGUARD is already registered in 12 EU states, six countries in Asia and in several other markets, including 17 Central and South American nations, Israel, Turkey, New Zealand and South Africa. Schering-Plough Animal Health is already marketing AVIGUARD in the countries where it is registered and will seek registration in additional countries.
